Welcome to Watermelon & Waves, our Coastal Community Garden Newsletter.
I do so love spring, the Noongar season of Kambarang. I certainly didn’t expect the winter weather to be so severe this year but it does make us appreciate the warmer longer days with less rain.
The birds are busy with their young; be mindful of the Maggie who are very territorial at this time of year. This is a great time to explore the Perth bushlands which are full of local blossoms. Watch out for native orchids, kangaroo paws, banksias and acacias displaying their God-given splendour. Look out for the bright orange/yellow flowers, our Native Australian Christmas Tree (Nuytsia) signalling the heat and Christmas approaching. While there, keep your eyes open for reptiles including snakes when you are traveling through the bush, their hibernation is coming to an end.

What’s Happening at the Patch
Have you been to the patch lately to see our new in ground garden bed?
We are still hoping for a recommendation for a licensed contractor to build our pergola, as well as earth moving equipment such as a dingo. If you are able to recommend anyone we would love to hear from you.
Also good news; we are hoping our new street signage will soon be up, increasing local awareness as well as making it easier for members and visitors to find us. Keep your eyes open for our lovely new signage which will go up when we have our Gardening Days.
If you’re looking to be involved, in any way why not come down on one of our gardening days; there is always something needing to be done, especially after all this rain. So if you are available we would love for you to join us. Keep your eye out on our Facebook page and come on down, meet other members and get involved.
Up and Coming Events:
Coastal Community Garden membership can now be done online. Alternatively you can contact us via our CCG email (see below in our list of events) or come to one of our Gardening Days.
Mark your calendars for these up and coming events:
- National Community Garden Open Day – 2nd November 9:30 – 12pm which includes:
- Pest and Diseases presentation at 10:30am by permaculturalist Fiona Blackham with complementary morning tea Coastal Community Garden tours.
- Fortnightly Gardening Days – don’t worry if you don’t have gloves or gardening tools; there are plenty in our shed.

What to Plant Now:

This month, instead of looking at a native plant, I thought we might look at identifying some of our common weeds. I’ve created a new page for this on our webpage Grow & Learn – Common Weeds.
Here we hope to have a variety of different topics which will help you grow your garden. Our first topic is on weeds, with tips on how to control them.
