Happy New Year 2025! Welcome to Coastal Community Garden’s third year of our Watermelon & Waves newsletter.
As many of you already know from reading our newsletters that the Noongar calendar has six seasons including two summers and two springs. To read more about the Noongar seasons we now have a brand new page called GROW. We are now moving into the second summer or Bunuru Season. This covers from February to March. Bunuru is typically a season with very little rain, very hot easterly winds and welcoming cool afternoon sea breezes. The local indigenous people know it for the abundance of white flowers which can be seen on the Jarrah, Marri and Ghost Gums.
What to expect in this issue:
- What’s Happening in our Garden
- Up and Coming Events
- Gardening Jobs During this Season: February – March
- What to Plant Now – Grow in Season
- This Issues Native Plant – Ghost Gum Eucalyptus laeliae
What’s Happening in Our Garden – Work done recently
Not a lot has been happening over the holiday season. We have experience some very hot days amongst some lovely cool days which have been very unusual for this time of the year. We had a pause on Busy Bee days over Christmas but were back into it mid-January. This was a time of cleaning out some of the old produce and putting in new plants. It was lovely to see so many members come and help, so much was accomplished. Unfortunately it wasn’t the best time to put in young plants with a predicted week of very hot weather but we were able to string up some shade cloth to help protect them. There was quite a bit of produce to take home too.
We now have three new webpages:
GALLERY: which gives an overview of the growth and different stages developing in our Coastal Community Garden. I hope you all enjoy the wonderful video on the home page, taken on our Opening Day in October 2024.
GROW: is where we hope to have information to help you grow your gardening knowledge.
SEASONAL JOBS: which is where you look for things you can do in the garden this season.
We are hoping to have more new pages added this year which we will inform you of through our newsletter. Some of these will include pages on ideas and information on setting up a wicking bed, compost bins and information on worn farms. Our Watermelon to Waves newsletter, on The Patch, will now have links to these pages.
With more work needed to help make our website function better, we are sorry to say we are still struggling to make our payment window serviceable. If you are needing to pay for this year’s membership or would like to join our membership, all inquiries need to be made via email.
We continue to look for new members to help us out in the garden, especially with the gardening, so if you’re interested please read through our Membership Agreement. In becoming a member you will also have access to our fresh organic produce. These past months we have been reaping the benefits of the wicking bed vegies with produce like: kale, tomatoes, squash and some very large zucchinis which are delicious when stuffed.
If you would like to be involved please let us know through our Facebook page or email us on: coastalcommunitygarden@gmail.com .
New Members:
CCG would like to thank members who have so generously contributed to the work in our garden both financially and physically. At present member’s fees continue to go towards establishing our garden.
Up and Coming Events:
Please check out our Facebook page for any up and coming events you might like to get involved in. There’s still lots to do and all hands are much appreciated. Please remember to bring sun protection, gloves and water.
Mark your calendars for these up and coming events:
- We are looking to grow our committee and welcome nominations for membership. Additionally, we welcome nominations for the role of chairperson as our beloved Natalie is stepping down to travel with her family. For more information please email us at: coastalcommunitygarden@gmail.com
- Fortnightly busy bee – don’t worry if you don’t have gloves or gardening tools; there are plenty in our shed.
- Come down and make new friends, eat and learn.
We hope to send out a reminder email for any major events.
Gardening Jobs During Bunuru Season:
Learn about what jobs we have suggested for this season on our new Seasonal Jobs page which can be accessed through the GROW page.
What to Plant Now:
This too can be accessed through our GROW page, under the heading Grow in Seasons then look for BUNURA SEASON – FEBRUARY – MARCH. Here you will also be able to plan ahead and prepare for the Djeran season (April – May)
This Issue’s Native Plant:
Once again this can be found on our GROW page under Grow Natives. This month we take a look at our iconic Ghost Gum – Eucalyptus laeliae from the Family: Myrtaceae. This page also covers information on other native plants we have looked since starting our newsletters.
I do hope you enjoy reading through our new pages.
